By now you should know that TheBluMile team are all about showcasing talent and bringing talented young people to the public eye. A while ago a mutual friend introduced me to a student/music producer called Tobi ‘ShyBoy’ Oladigbolu. If you remember the song called That Guy by Junior Brat x Bigz that was on the site a while ago, Tobi was responsible for it’s production.
Long story short, he approached me about a beat he produced and I ended up wanting to interview him. The best parts of the interview were his humility, learning of his willingness to work hard and the fact that he named UK producers, whilst most are quick to make comparisons to US producers (myself included) he name checked a few homegrown talents as he is a proud representer of Team UK. The interview follows…
Sam: When did you start producing beats?
TSB: I started producing beats when I was around 16 years of age. As soon as I was done with GCSE’s to be honest.
Sam: What producers and music genres influence your sound the most?
TSB: There are so many producers, I like to pick and choose from a bunch, I like things from everyone I listen to, I would say my main influences starting out would have to be, Mikey J, Davinche, and my older brother. Genre wise, It is a mix of, Grime, Dubstep, Pop, Hip-Hop, Dance and R&B.
Sam: We’ve seen producers in the US such as Mike Will, Lex Luger and Cardiak and even The Neptunes are famed for their ability to make it known that they produced a track. Do you feel that it’s important to have a signature sound?
TSB: It most definitely is, without some sort of signature, can you really claim something is your own? I love the fact that I can hear a beat and know who made it or have a good chance at guessing who made it.
Sam: What do you like the most about what you do?
TSB: I would have to say the thing I like the most is the creating. It can be stressful at times but, I love it. From having an Idea in my head or hearing something to laying down a track.
Sam: I’ve heard That Guy (collab between Junior Brat & Bigz) on the radio and seen it get good feedback. How does that make you feel?
TSB: It makes me feel good. It’s the first record I’ve produced which has been played on various radio stations, debuting on BBC 1XTRA. However I don’t want to dwell on it, I’d rather get back in the studio and continue to make good music.
Sam: Are you afraid of you and your sound being put in a box as we’ve seen with Lex Luger?
TSB: I wouldn’t say afraid, I know that versatility is key so let’s see where versatility will take me.
Sam: Who are you feeling musically? (can be producers/rappers/singers etc)
TSB: Currently I’m feeling Angel, he’s dope! Cleo Sol also. Rapper’s i’m currently feeling are, Maxsta, Sneakbo and Cashtastic. They’re doing their thing right now!
Sam: Who would you love to collaborate with?
TSB: That would have to be Mike Skinner. He’s just that guy!
Sam: I love that you named UK talents. It’s quite easy to lose interest in your scene but you pay attention and note the people that have set trends within the UK. For those that want to get familiar with your sound and who you are how can they contact you and hear your work?
TSB: For some of my portfolio you can check www.soundcloud.com/tobishyboy .. I will hopefully be updating it weekly from now on all summer with remixes that I will be working on. I’m also on twitter and facebook @TobiShyboy .
